Andrew Melrose (1836-1901)

Born in Selkirk, Scotland, Andrew Melrose emigrated to the United States around 1856.  He first settled in West Hoboken, New Jersey and later moved to Guttenberg, New Jersey.  Melrose is best known for his landscape paintings of New Jersey, the Hudson Valley and New York Harbor.  In addition, he made many painting tips to the Berkshires, the mountains of North Carolina and Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. He also traveled abroad to Cornwall, England, Killarney, Ireland and the Tyrolese Alps.

Melrose exhibited frequently at the National Academy of Design from 1862 until 1883 and the Brooklyn Art Association. His best known work, New York Harbor and the Battery from 1887 is in the collection of the White House in Washington D.C.
