William Meyerowitz (1887-1981)

Born in Eksterinnoslav, Ukraine, William Meyerowitz came to the United States in 1908 and settled in New York City.  In 1914, he began his art training at the National Academy of Design, and established a successful career in New York. Among his many accomplishments were the portraits he painted of noted citizens such as Albert Einstein.  Meyerowitz was also a successful writer and contributed to several publications, including the Journal of the College Art Association and the Monoran Journal.  He was a well respected teacher; between 1930 and 1940 he taught at the Settlement House in New York and at the Modern School of Self-Expression between 1940 and 1945.  During the summer, he and his wife, artist Theresa Ferber Bernstein, lived in Gloucester, Massachusetts.

In 1959, Meyerowitz was awarded full membership to the National Academy of Design. He was also made a member of the North Shore and Rockport Art Associations, the Society of Independent Artists and the Allied Artists of America. His work has been exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Corcoran Gallery of Art biennial exhibitions.
