Samuel Roscoe Chaffee was born in Seekonk, Massachusetts, in 1850, and left home during his teenage years to begin working as a clerk at a shoe store in nearby Providence, Rhode Island. He eventually took ownership of the company when his employer passed away in 1877, but the business did not bring him much success and he sold it in 1881, opting instead to pursue his passion for art. Many might consider this a risky venture, especially for a young man only recently married a few years prior, however he possessed a natural ability and was particularly adept with the watercolor medium.
