More information about this painting...
While recognized for his paintings of the working harbors of Cape Ann, Silver Mirror exemplifies Mulhaupt's approach to more rural scenery. Shrouded in the warm ochres and browns of autumn, he captured a stream winding through the forest, its glistening waters carrying the viewer through the scene and reflecting silver light from the overcast sky. Mulhaupt’s ability to interpret the essence of the season is evident in his earthy palette of gold and green tones, while the tranquil landscape is enlivened by the artist’s wonderful interplay of broad and short brushstrokes.
Working in oil, watercolor, and pastel, Mulhaupt exhibited frequently at major venues including the National Academy of Design, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Corcoran Gallery of Art. Highly regarded, he was often the recipient of exhibition prizes, including awards at the Allied Artists of America, the National Arts Club, and the Philadelphia World’s Fair in 1926. That same year Mulhaupt was elected an Associate member of the National Academy of Design.
