The texture Liz Haywood-Sullivan brings out in cloudy skies is on full display in this painting. Dense clouds rich with subtle colors hang over the distant cityscape and pale gold light streams through, drawing the mind to the beauty of the ever-changing sky.

When asked to describe her relationship with pastel Liz said, “Once I started using pastels I was seduced by the light, by the texture of the medium, by the immediacy, by the earthy feel of a pastel in my hand. When I paint with pastel, the pastel itself feels as if it is an extension of my fingers.”
Today, she works exclusively as a professional pastel artist, art educator, and community arts advocate. Haywood-Sullivan was the President of the International Association of Pastel Societies (IAPS) and is the IAPS representative to the American Society of Testing and Materials. She is a member of the Academic Artists Association, and holds Signature Memberships in the Pastel Society of America (PSA), the Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod, and the Connecticut Pastel Society. In 2009 she was elected a member of the venerable Salmagundi Club, and in their 127th Annual Members’ Exhibition in 2010, she was given the highest prize awarded to pastels – the Art Spirit Foundation Dianne B. Bernhard Gold Medal for Excellence in Pastel. Vose Galleries has proudly held solo shows of Liz Haywood-Sullivan's work in 2007, 2011, and 2019, and opened a fourth solo exhibition demonstrating her sensitivity to the seasonal rhythms of the natural world in the summer of 2021.
