In 1935, Beal and his wife Helen, whom he married in 1924, traveled to the faraway lands of India, China and Southeast Asia aboard the steamship "President Van Buren", which offered the artist accommodations for his studio. This watercolor, done off the coast of Malaysia, captures the region in a more peaceful time, before the outbreak of World War II.
