Grape Vine on the Summer House embodies the artist’s intentional, yet playful use of color in his work: “My choice of color is dictated by tact and decorum stretched by an unholy desire to be outrageous. I’m trying to get color to the danger point where it’s too sweet or too noisy without actually making it too sweet or too noisy.” An especially personal painting for the artist, Grape Vine on the Summer House showcases Kahn’s farmhouse in West Brattleboro, Vermont, where he spent every summer alongside his wife and fellow artist Emily Mason, both passing the days with a paintbrush in their hands.
