Painted in 1918, the still life was shown in Rhode Island eleven years later at the Art Association of Newport (now the Newport Art Museum and Art Association), of which Thompson was a founding member. He led an advanced outdoor painting class at the Association beginning in 1914 and also taught at nearby St. George’s, a private high school.

More information about this painting...
Still Life - Buddha is an excellent example demonstrating the care he took to combine items varying in color, texture and shape, and his faithful rendition of strong light and dark elements in one space. It also conveys the popularity of Asian objets d’art found in many fashionable New England homes and, astutely, also in the studios of the artists whose works they collected.
