Connaway welcomed the silence of Maine, and later Vermont, believing that isolation helped his creativity. The ruggedness of nature is reflected in his images of the turbulent Maine coast, in which he captured waves breaking on its rocky shores under windblown clouds and thundering weather. Paintings such as Rocks and Surf convey the powerful onrush of water pounding against the shoreline in such an effective way that the viewer senses that they can hear the roar of the wind and surf and feel the spray in the air.
