Trees, Pasture, and Pool depicts a large oak tree, cast in warm late afternoon light, beside a pond stretching into the distance. The primed wooden board is revealed in spots through the thinly painted sky, acting as golden highlights in the clouds. A typical subject for Parrish, the effervescent quality of the scene reveals his deep appreciation for the outdoors, a love of Nature that brought him to Cornish, New Hampshire, in the 1890s.

Stephen Parrish is best known today for being the father of painter and illustrator Maxfield Parrish; however, he was an accomplished painter in his own right, and one of the leading printmakers during the American Etching Revival in the late 19th century.

Parrish was one of the first Americans to exhibit his work in the newly organized Royal Society of Painters and Etchers in 1881. His etchings were published in Century Illustrated Magazine and the American Art Review, and he was a member of the Philadelphia Society of Etchers, the Philadelphia Sketch Club, and the New York Etching Club. He exhibited widely throughout his career, including at the Pennsylvania Academy from 1877 to 1879, the National Academy of Design from 1879 to1880, the Art Club of Philadelphia in 1892, the World’s Fair in Chicago in 1893, Macbeth Gallery in New York City, the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, DC, the Albright Gallery in Buffalo, the Society of Independent Artists in New York City, and the American Art Association. Today his works are in the collections of the National Museum of American History, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, the Cape Ann Museum in Gloucester, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
