Though he made his home in Pennsylvania, Knapp traveled throughout the northeast on his many sketching trips, capturing picturesque scenes from New Hampshire’s White Mountains to the Berkshires of Massachusetts and across to New York’s Hudson River Valley. His idyllic landscapes were often infused with the soft glow of warm sunlight and dotted with cattle or people existing in harmony with their surroundings. Landscape with Fishermen is a quintessential example of Knapp’s work, with its earthy palette and diffused light, and the distant cliffs serving as a backdrop to the figures taking in an afternoon of leisure.
