Lamotte wants us to ponder the lives of these people, who they are, what they are thinking, where they are going; and these mothers and children, café owners, vendors, street sweepers and fishermen, and even their pets, become universal characters in stories we ourselves construct, over a half-century since he first put paint to canvas. His chronicles, while timeless tributes to Parisian society, reveal daily lives not too different from our own.
