Frank Swift Chase (1886-1958)

Born in St. Louis, Frank Swift Chase studied painting in New York at the Art Students’ League. He also studied painting with landscape painters Birge Harrison, F. Luis Mora and John F. Carlson. Chase exhibited his work in New York, at the National Academy of Design, and at the Woodstock (New York) Art Association. In addition, he also showed his paintings at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC and the Nantucket Art Association. In 1922 he received prizes from both the Chicago Art Institute and the Newport Art Association.

Beginning around 1912, Chase taught summer art classes on Nantucket. His students were mainly ladies summering on the island, including serious artists Isabelle Tuttle, Anne Ramsdell Congdon and Elizabeth Saltonstall. Although he was primarily a landscape painter, Chase’s Nantucket paintings often depicted the seashore.
