Samuel W. Griggs (1827-1898)

Samuel W. Griggs (1827-1898)

Born in Boston, Samuel W. Griggs worked briefly as an architect before becoming a professional artist.  In 1854, he opened a studio on Tremont Row and moved to the Studio Building shortly after it opened in 1862. Although he was an active participant in artistic circles in Boston, Griggs seemed to have little inclination to exhibit his works elsewhere. He showed paintings at the Boston Athenaeum and traveled to popular painting sites in the White Mountains with other Boston artists Samuel L. Gerry and Benjamin Champney. Griggs died in Boston in 1898.
