Raised in Buffalo, New York, John Yerger pursued his art studies locally at the Art Institute of Buffalo from 1950 to 1953, and in Boston, Massachusetts, at the Vesper George School of Art in the early 1960s. As a child, he became an admirer of nineteenth century American masters, such as Albert Bierstadt, Thomas Eakins, and Winslow Homer, during a visit to the Albright Knox Art Gallery with his father. Fittingly, he began working in a similar landscape tradition when launching his own career, but gradually shifted to still life by the early 1990s. Through this transition, he remained faithful to his idols by incorporating their imagery into his highly detailed and wonderfully charming trompe l’oeil compositions.
