Anne R. Congdon (1873-1958)

Daughter of a New Hampshire Governor George A. Ramsdell, Anne Ramsdell Congdon was born and raised in Nashua, New Hampshire. In 1891 she traveled to Paris and she studied painting at the Académie Delecluse. Upon her return she was active in Nashua as a watercolor painter and there she met Dr. Charles E. Congdon, a promising surgeon. In 1902 the two were married. Shortly afterwards, she gave up painting to raise two sons and to run an antique shop. In the early 1920s, while summering with her family on Nantucket, Congdon started painting in oils under the tutelage of Frank Swift Chase. The Congdons loved Nantucket and moved there permanently in 1930.

Congdon is best remembered for her oil paintings of the 1930s and ‘40s. These works are large and bold, dominated by vigorous brushwork quite unlike her earlier watercolors. She was an active member of the artist’s community on Nantucket which included Maude Strom and Edgar Jenney.  She was also member of the Artists Association and a regular exhibitor at the Easy Street Gallery between the 1920’s and 1940’s as well as the Kenneth Taylor Galleries between the 1940’s and 1950’s.
