Growing up along the Rhode Island coast, Cindy House became fascinated with nature through the influence of her mother, a natural history teacher and photographer. Together they would explore New England’s abundant woodlands, meadows and beaches, taking pictures and field notes, and awaiting the arrival of the developed film before holding slide shows for neighbors and friends, helping refine her eye for composition. She then worked at a bird sanctuary in high school before pursuing a degree in wildlife biology at the University of Maine, and during her last year eagerly accepted a project to design, write and illustrate a handbook on wildlife for the Boy Scouts of America. This reinvigorated her creative side and, following in the footsteps of John James Audubon and his iconic 19th century tome, The Birds of North America, led her to pursue a career as a field-guide artist. Over more than fifteen years she created illustrations for various publications, including the National Geographic Society’s Field Guide to the Birds of North America, Kimball Garrett’s and Jon Dunn’s Field Guide to Warblers, as well as for fields guides on the birds of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
