Harold Dunbar (1882-1957)
Artist, writer and teacher Harold C. Dunbar was born in Brockton, Massachusetts, in 1882. He studied art with E.L. Major and Joseph Decamp before enrolling in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School under Edmund C. Tarbell, and continued his training in Paris at the Académie Colarossi.

Dunbar lived in Boston and then moved to the Hayden Studios on Belmont Hill in 1906. He spent much of his time on Cape Cod, painting landscapes and teaching. He was the editor of the Cape Cod Beacon as well as Director of the Chatham Summer Art Classes from 1915 until the 1950s.
Beginning in 1905 Dunbar exhibited paintings at the Boston Art Club and the annual exhibitions of the Brockton Woman’s Club. He was a member of the American Water Color Society and was included in exhibitions at the Corcoran Gallery of American Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the National Academy of Design. His work is represented in the collections of Radcliffe College, the State House in Montpelier, Vermont, the Empire Theater in New York City and the Little Theater in Chatham, Massachusetts.
