Henry Pember Smith (1854-1907)
Self-taught artist Henry Pember Smith was born in Waterford, Connecticut, in 1854 and is best known for his pastoral scenes of New England. With their luminous skies and precisely modeled trees, Smith’s landscapes capture picturesque farmyards and rural streets from New York to Maine. He also produced seascapes of Cape Ann, Rhode Island and New Jersey, and during the 1880s traveled to Europe, painting along the Cornish Coast of England, in addition to trips to Brittany, Normandy and Venice.
