J. Clinton Shepherd (1888-1975)
Born in Des Moines, Iowa, J. Clinton Shepherd studied at the University of Missouri and later at the Kansas City School of Fine Arts and the Art Institute of Chicago. He settled in New York and Westport, Connecticut during the 1920s where he worked steadily as a magazine illustrator. In addition to his career as an illustrator Shepherd worked actively as a painter and sculptor specializing in animals and scenes of the American West.

From 1941 until 1946 he was Director of the Norton School of Art in Palm Beach, Florida and later Dean of Art at Barry College in Miami. By 1962 he settled permanently in Palm Beach. He was active in the Florida art community and was made a member of the Palm Beach Art League. His work was featured at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the National Academy of Design. He was awarded prizes by the Miami Artist League in 1940 and the Palm Beach Art League in 1941.
