Mary Coulter (1880-1966)
Born in Newport, Kentucky, Mary Coulter studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy with Frank Duveneck, the Art Institute of Chicago and went on to receive a Ph.D from the University of Chicago. In addition she studied abroad with Charles Hawthorne.

Coulter went on to become the curator of prints at the Art Institute of Chicago. She later settled in Santa Barbara, California and became the Assistant Director of the San Diego Fine Arts Gallery in 1938.
She was a member of the San Francisco Art Association, the California Art Club and the National Association of Women Artists. She exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the San Francisco Art Association, the Los Angeles Museum of Art and the Pan – Pacific Exposition in 1915 where she received a medal.
