James Jeffrey Grant found his “favorite sketching ground” in Gloucester, Massachusetts, summering there for twenty years and exhibiting works at the North Shore Art Association between 1934 and 1956. He recorded the daily activities of the fishermen and villagers with his oils and watercolors, capturing life as he experienced it. Drying Gillnets, Arnold's Wharf, East Gloucester depicts a slice of this coastal life in bright blocks of color.
