George H. Gay worked in all media, but was especially adept at watercolor, which allowed him to capture the transparency of churning seas and atmospheric qualities of sunlight and clouds. These elements are present in Surf, Long Beach, Rockport, and viewing it one can almost hear the roar of the breakers and calls of the seagulls hovering nearby. While Long Beach is technically a part of Rockport, it is easy to understand how Gay initially assigned his title given its proximity to its southern neighbor, and today lifeguards from both towns patrol the beautiful stretch of sand and water. In addition to Cape Ann, Gay found inspiration on the shores of Marblehead and Nahant, as well as Narragansett, Rhode Island, and Monhegan Island, Maine.
