Exhibition: Rooted in History: An Ode to the Leading Ladies

Exhibition Information

On exhibition July 30, 2024 - September 10, 2024

As the summer season flourishes and the heat continues to persevere, it is the perfect time to enjoy and admire summery scenes by equally steadfast historical women artists. Late 19th and early 20th century society encouraged middle- and upper-class women to maintain respectable and domestic pastimes, such as painting. However, these women were subsequently expected to leave their brushes behind and abandon their painting careers once married, so they could focus on the family and the home. But that was not the case for all women artists. Many artists, including Jane Peterson, Helen Savier DuMond, and Paulette Van Roekens, devoted their lives to their painting professions. Several of these successful women also founded their own organizations to support women in the arts, such as Pauline Palmer, who was the first female president of the Chicago Society of Artists, and went on to establish the Association of Chicago Painters and Sculptors. Vose Galleries is delighted to display the works of these prolific women artists in Rooted in History: An Ode to the Leading Ladies, an exhibition dedicated to honoring the beautiful artistry and fighting spirit of these women. The exhibition will be viewable online and in the gallery July 30th through September 10th.
