While blossoming trees of spring and the planting and harvesting of crops and hay of summer and fall provided a wealth of visual material for Theodore Wendel, winters were equally inspiring and allowed him to apply his impressionist technique to Ipswich’s snow-covered homes, fields and salt marshes. Snow Scene with Children Playing was likely painted at their Upper Farm property and reveals Wendel’s talent for rendering light and atmosphere even during the coldest of seasons, particularly in his depiction of the canopies of icy branches and the crisp morning air.
