In the charming View in Woburn, painted a decade before he would call the town home, the warmth of autumn sunlight is keenly felt and experienced, demonstrating Champney’s innate ability to imbue his landscapes with a touch of magical realism, turning already picturesque environs into places which tease the imagination. Even within the confines of the board’s 6 x 8-inch size, aspects such as the gaps between the tree branches, the tops of low mountains, and the ordinary figure strolling down a lane playfully come together to create a wondrous spectacle.
