Carl Gordon Cutler (1873-1945)

It is not headline news to hear of the re-discovery of a long forgotten painter, but it doesn’t often involve a Boston resident. Carl Gordon Cutler lived in Newton and was a frequent exhibitor in Boston and New York. He was considered ahead of his time and joined with four or five fellow painters for mutual support. First known as the Boston Four with Maurice Prendergast, Charles Hovey Pepper, and E. Ambrose Webster, and later as the Boston Five with Harley Perkins, Charles Hopkinson, Charles Hovey Pepper, and Marion Monks Chase. In Boston they showed with Vose Galleries; in New York members of the group were included in the 1913 Armory Show.

His son Charles became a top-notch sculptor and also showed with Vose Galleries. In his late life Charles taught sculpture in the Cincinnati Museum School. When he passed away his widow called Robert C. Vose Jr. to ask if he might be interested in the collection of watercolors left by her husband’s father. Of course he was. Vose held an Estate Preview show of Cutler’s paintings during the summer of ’94, Along the Maine Coast.
